Escape alcove in Dalecarlia tunnel
Apr 1994. A "guess-and-see" shot in the dark (literally) showing one of the alcoves used by anyone caught in the tunnel when a train approached. There are three of these niches on each side, staggered in spacing.

I am curious if these were typical?
Were they in other tunnels, too?
The case in point is an accident under the Air Rights building in Bethesda, which in the 60s claimed the life of a local young man. I recently read about it but don't fully know the circumstances.
Would a niche/alcove like this saved his life?
